The Vienna Trilogy represents the experience of a world moving towards catastrophe mixed with the experience of starting a new phase of life and moving to a city of mythologized well-being. Accordingly, the three pieces describe a journey from the cheerful feelings of arrival to the confrontation with war, war crimes and trauma while working with migrants and refugees in my day job to the experience of the often harsh reality of the big city with poverty and abandonment. Through the extensive use of field recordings recorded in Vienna and their electronic amplification and distortion, the mythical euphony of Vienna is deconstructed. The real can be experienced by listening to the distorted.
The three peices of the trilogy are:
1. Awakening of Cheerful Feelings on Arrival in Vienna
This is the first track I produced since relocating to Vienna a few weeks ago. Field recordings in Vienna and organ improvisation with a nod to Beethoven. This piece is about the experience of euphoria upon arriving in a new phase of life and a new city. Psychologically speaking, this is also the first phase of the intercultural encounter. Everything is fine…or is it?
2. Angelus Novus Viennensis
In these days of war and war crimes: Angelus Novus is trying hard to forget, but the harder he tries, the faster the storm of history blows him away from paradise. This is the tragedy of the angels, that they are continuously trying to return to paradise, but constantly fail.
3. Vienna Deconstruction
The experience of the city in everyday life confronts the idealized myth of Vienna with the often harsh reality of poverty and abandonment. This experience makes it necessary to deconstruct the myth. The confrontation with reality is represented here through the exclusive use of field recordings recorded in Vienna as sound sources. These sound sources are electronically amplified and distorted to reflect the reality of Vienna.
